The most important markings on flashlights

Die wichtigsten Kennzeichnungen bei Taschenlampen

A flashlight has long been more than just a light source – it combines modern technology in a compact design. In addition to brightness, range, and battery life, important markings and specifications also play a crucial role.

But what do CE, IP, RoHS, and WEEE actually mean? And what do the battery specifications tell you about safety and performance?

In our LUXPEAK overview, we explain the most important markings and show you what to look for when making a purchase.

🇪🇺 CE – Conformity for the EU Market

CE stands for the European conformity marking.

This means that the manufacturer declares that the product meets the EU requirements applicable to it. The CE marking may be mandatory for electrical and electronic products.

Important:
CE is not a quality seal and does not automatically mean that an EU authority has tested the product.

In short:
CE = The product meets the applicable EU requirements.

RoHS – Fewer Hazardous Substances

RoHS stands for the restriction of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

The requirements limit, among other things, certain substances that may be used in electronics.

RoHS = Requirements for certain substances in electronic products.

WEEE – Not in Household Waste

The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol identifies electrical and electronic equipment.

It means:
This product must not be disposed of with unsorted household waste.

In the EU, this marking is generally mandatory for such electrical and electronic equipment; it must normally be permanently and clearly visible on the product.

WEEE = Dispose of electrical equipment properly.

Rechargeable Batteries & Batteries

For flashlights with lithium rechargeable batteries, the requirements for batteries and rechargeable batteries are also relevant.

These include, for example, information on capacity, marking, and safety. The EU Battery Regulation sets specific requirements for this; some marking requirements apply or will change from 2026.

For lithium batteries and rechargeable batteries, UN 38.3 also plays an important role.

UN 38.3 refers to the mandatory safety tests for lithium rechargeable batteries and batteries, particularly for their safe transport.

Battery marking = Information and requirements regarding batteries and safety.

LUXPEAK TIP

Not every marking is a quality seal.

CE, RoHS, and WEEE have different legal functions. The IP protection rating, on the other hand, describes a specific technical feature of the flashlight.

Therefore, when making a purchase, you should not only look for a high lumen count, but also for safety, protection rating, battery, and verifiable product specifications.
